The term "monody" is used in two senses:
As a synonym of monophony (a solo melodic line as opposed to unanimity and polyphony).
In the history of music follows the solo vocal style that is distinguished by a melodic line and organic accompaniment.
Although this music is found in various cultures throughout history, the term refers specifically to early 17th century Italian song (circa 1600-1640). It is a term - invention of researchers, as compositions in monodic style had various other names.
